Girls For Tech:

COVID-19 has hit the world hard, but our team perseveres nonetheless. Throughout the off-season, we had spent our time recruiting new members and upskilling ourselves, until at last, in mid-November, we were ready to resume outreach activities in full.

A three-hour long online event, our main aim was to spread awareness of STEM to young girls. An introduction to programming was due, for these beginners had just started upon the path to the world of computer technology. From inspiring speeches from esteemed guest speakers, professionals in their field- Archana Manjunata and Sidhi Dhir, to an hour of intensive education on the variables of python programming, ranging from simple print functions to more complex loop statements, the first half of the event paved the way for the participants’ eager action.

The second half was decidedly more exciting. Not only were the participants immensely successful in creating their first program using python- a simple calculator function, a 20-minute long Q&A session led to the clearing of their doubts. With promises of similar events in the future, the doors had opened for more girls to pique their interest in the realms of Sciences, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.

Being our team’s first outreach event of the new season, Girls For Tech was a significant step forward. The target demographic of this event -young girls- a minority in the existing STEM sector, now had potential to pursue their heart through the fields of technological advancement. Moreover, with an incredibly effective online service - Zoom - and a brief presentation on our own team and its aspirations in both FIRST and STEM as a whole, this event was, effectively, our return to the playing field.
